Wildfire Continues To Burn Near NY’s Harriman State Park
TUXEDO, N.Y. (AP) — Officials say firefighters have contained approximately 90 percent of a wildfire that scorched roughly 440 acres of forest on the Orange County side of Harriman State Park.
Orange County's fire coordinator says the blaze has been burning on Tom Jones Mountain in the town of Tuxedo since late Sunday and still remains a danger.
Recent rains have not extinguished the flames and a force of about 50 state Department of Environmental Conservation employees are continuing firefighting efforts.
Fire crews from three Orange County companies — Tuxedo, Monroe and Greenwood Lake — have also battled the blaze.
No populated areas have been threatened by the fire. The area where the blaze has been burning is considered rough country with rocky terrain and cliffs along the Orange-Rockland county line.
