Alex Rodriguez hit career home run number 659 and drove in two runs as the Yankees grabbed the rubber match in the first round of the 2015 Subway Series beating the Mets by a 6-4 final on Sunday Night Baseball.

A-Rod's blast draws him to just one shy of tying Willie Mays (660) for fourth on the all-time home runs list. It came in the bottom of the first inning after the Mets had scored twice in the top half, including a leadoff home run from ex-Yankee Curtis Granderson.

Having won eleven straight entering the series, the Mets continue to be hampered by poor fielding, especially on Sunday. Four errors lead to a pair of unearned runs.

Brett Gardner tallied a pair of hits and scored twice for the Yanks, who've now won eight of their last ten. Starter Evan Eovaldi did not factor in the decision for the pinstripes, giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out six over 4 and 1/3 innings.

The Mets' Jonathon Niese (2-1) suffered the loss, yielding eight hits and six runs (four earned) over five innings.

Both teams are back in action on Monday. The Yankees stay home to begin a series with the Rays while the Mets head south to open a set with the Marlins in Miami.
