New York, NY (WIBX) - Turns out Alex Rodriguez's benching for the final two games of the 2012 American League Championship Series was just the start of what will be a long stretch of the Yankees playing without their $30-million a year man.

GM Brian Cashman has announced A-Rod will undergo his surgery to cure several issues, placing him on the shelf for four to six months.

Rodriguez is reportedly suffering from a torn labrum, bone impingement and a cyst on his hip - and with recovery time and rehab time, he's expected to miss most if not all of the first half of the 201 season.

Expect the Yankees to make a move to shore up third base in his absence, at a minimum, and maybe beyond.
