Albany, NY (WIBX) - The Department of Environmental Conservation is preventing future electric generating facilities from hurting the environment.

Starting July 12th, the DEC's new regulations require facilities to evaluate their impact on environmental justice communities, described as areas with minority and low-income residents.

Applicants must now perform several tasks before building, such as evaluating the make-up of the community and attempting to minimize negative impacts.

The agency also adopted new CO2 emission limits for new electric facilities, obligating record keeping and monitoring consistent with existing regulations.
