A Chicago man is in a local hospital after driving his car into a tree in an attempt to harm himself. Oneida County Sheriff Rob Maciol says Rafer Caudill, 45, Of Chicago, IL crashed on Route 365 near Mapledale road in the Town of Trenton.

Caudill's car ended up on its side against a tree that had power lines tangled in it.

Emergency crews had to wait for National Grid to arrive and turn off the power to the lines before freeing Caudill.

He suffered head and leg injuries and was sent to St. Elizabeth's Hospital for mental health evaluation. He was also issued several traffic tickets returnable to the Town of Trenton Court at a later date.
