The Mets opted not to make a splash at the MLB trade deadline but on Tuesday decided to trade for catcher Kelly Shoppach, hoping to bring some offense to a position that sorely needs it.

The Mets made a waiver claim for the 32-year-old backstop and will send Boston a 'player to be named later.'

Shoppach hit .250 with 5 HR's and 17 RBI's in his 48 games with the Red Sox this year. While those numbers are modest, it's more production that the 2 HR'S and 36 RBI's the Mets got from a total of four cathers over the first 117 games. Josh Thole, who gets the bulk of time behind the plate, is still expected to be the starter.
