It was looking like another one of those frustrating nights with the Mets nearly squandering a more than quality start from their starting staff. But, three runs in the ninth helped grabbed New York a 3-0 win in the series opener over the Giants in San Francisco Monday night.

Jonathon Niese yielded just three hits and two walks over eight shutout innings to earn his first win since May 9th.

Backup catcher Johnny Monell smacked a two-run double in the top of the ninth to break a scoreless tie and give the Mets their third win in four games. Monell came around to score as well on a Juan Lagares single.

Giants rookie pitcher Chris Heston threw seven and a third shutout innings giving up just three hits and walking four. He did not factor in the decision.

Jeurys Familia, who was named as a All-Star Game Final Vote candidate on Monday, closed the door in the ninth for his 23rd save.
