The drivers of more than 4.7 million vehicles are being urged to act immediately to replace defective airbags.

The recall is being issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for certain BMW, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota vehicles.

The NHTSA says, "The message comes with urgency, especially for owners of vehicles affected by the regional recalls in the following areas: Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii."

To find out if your car is affected by the recall visit: www.https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/.  Note that you will need your car's vehicle identification number, or "VIN," to access this service. [EDITOR'S NOTE: As of 10/22/2014 at 10:40am the NHTSA site appears to be down temporarily.  A note on the website says that the NHTSA is aware of the problem and that it is working to fix the site.  They ask that anyone interested checks the site later this afternoon.]
