DEWITT, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a worker's hard hat likely saved his life after he was hit by a falling steel beam at a suburban Syracuse construction site.

Officials say tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bit.ly/290GCwL ) that officers responded around 11 a.m. Monday to a report of a man injured at a work site on Thompson Road in the town of DeWitt. Police said that a smaller corner beam from a larger bundle of beams had dropped and struck the worker and his hard hat.

He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he's listed in stable condition. Police say he's expected to survive.

The accident occurred where a new gas station convenience store is being built off Carrier Circle. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.
