Facing a six-run deficit with seven outs remaining, the New York Mets mounted an improbable rally and stunned the Washington Nationals 8-7 on Wednesday on the back of a pinch-hit, go-ahead homer from unlikely hero Kirk Nieuwenhuis.
Michael Taylor's two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning tied the game before the young center fielder stole second and scored the winning run as the Nationals rallied for a 4-3 win over the second-place Mets in a Wednesday afternoon rubber match in Washington.
The Mets were just one strike away from an Opening Day win at Citi Field on Monday before their bullpen coughed up the lead for the second time, not only costing the team a win, but also Juan Lagares' chance to play hero.
