We're learning more about what police have called the suspicious death of 19-year-old Lucas Leonard of Clayville on Monday. And, now New Hartford Police say there is a second victim, a 17-year-old male who is in serious condition, police said.

Bruce Leonard, 65, and Deborah Leonard, 59, have been charged with manslaughter in the death of their son. Additionally, four others have been charged with assault in connection with the incident: Joseph Irwin, 26, David Morey, 26, Linda Morey, 54, and Sarah Ferguson, 33, police said.

Lucas Leonard was transported in a private vehicle to a local hospital on Monday. Police say they were initially told Leonard suffered from a gunshot wound. Authorities have not confirmed he was shot, but say the teen died at the hospital of blunt force trauma.

In conducting their investigation, New Hartford Police interviewed several members of the Word of Life Church, located on 3354 Oneida Street in New Hartford/Chadwicks. That resulted in several children being taken from the church and turned over to Oneida County Child Protective Services, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and police say additional arrests are expected to be made in the following days.

Meanwhile, the group of six appeared briefly in court Tuesday for arraignment on the charges. Bail was set at $100,000 for Deborah and Bruce Leonard, according to Alissa Scott of the Utica Observer Dispatch. Scott also reported all six are due back in court on Friday for a felony exam.
