ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say police officers have shot and killed a pit bull that was mauling a woman outside a Rochester home.

Rochester police say officers responded around 1 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a dog attacking a person. When they arrived at the scene they saw a pit bull biting a woman near the end of a driveway.

Officials say the officers fired at the dog, killing it.

The 33-year-old woman was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she's listed in stable condition.

Deputy Police Chief Scott Peters say the officers probably saved the woman's life.

Officials say a man at the scene was hit by a projectile, but it's unclear if it was a bullet that struck him. He's also hospitalized.

Police say they're trying to determine who owned the dog.
