Utica, NY (WIBX) - According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more people are living closer to nuclear reactors. The analysis provided by Longcreative for msnbc.com states that the 2010 Census shows a 17-percent population boom within 10-miles of emergency planing zones near nuclear power plants.

Veronica Lavarro, Media Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau in the New York Region says locally the figures are mixed. "For the Indian Point nuclear site, the population from the 2010 census count is, 56,853 and that's up 7.1 percent from ten years ago. And for the Nine Mile Point, their population actually went down from ten years ago, so their current population is 145,170, which is down 1.5 percent," Lavarro said.

She says the population living within 10 miles of Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island reactor went up 11 percent. The nearest major city to Indian Point is White Plains, and Syracuse is the nearest major city to Nine Mile Point. The report produced by the data analysis and design company also states that among the 100 most populous cities in the new census map, 26 have nuclear plants within 50 miles of their population.
