ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A financial advisor and lawyer has pleaded guilty for a scheme in which he and an ex-town judge stole millions of dollars from an upstate New York family's trusts.

State Attorney General Letitia James announced Tuesday that 60-year-old Thomas Lagan pleaded guilty in an Albany court to felony grand larceny charges.

Authorities say he and former Guilderland Town Judge Richard Sherwood hatched a scheme to steal more than $9 million dollars from philanthropists Warren and Pauline Bruggeman and two of the couple's relatives while providing estate planning and financial services to the couple.

Both men were charged in February 2018. The 58-year-old Sherwood pleaded guilty four months later. He faces up to three to 10 years in prison.

Lagan faces up to four to 12 years in prison when he's sentenced June 19.
