Aerial spraying will be conducted tonight in the Town of Sullivan to combat  the spread of a mosquito-related disease.

The Madison County Health Department made the decision to spray after they say they found evidence of the Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus in five mosquito pools.

Spraying is expected to take place on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

During this time residents - especially children and pregnant women - are asked to stay inside during the expected spraying time or avoiding the area wherever spraying takes place for approximately thirty minutes after spraying.  This will reduce the chances of inhaling pesticides.

Residents who grow fruits and vegetables are advised to thoroughly wash all produce with water before cooking or eating.

If outdoor tables and play equipment is exposed to spraying they should be washed with water and detergent.

Laundry and play items should be brought inside if possible.  If outdoor items are exposed they should be washed with water and detergent.

Outdoor pet dishes should be brought in or covered.  Those  left out should be washed with detergent and water immediately after spraying.

These recommendations are a guideline, but are by no means all-inclusive.  Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the Madison County Health Department at: (315) 366.2361 and visit their website at www.healthymadisoncounty.org/.  Beekeepers are advised to call the Health Department as well for specific instructions on how to protect bees from the spraying.

Health officials say that, although the chances of experiencing any health effects from spraying are low, residents who feel that they are experiencing any health effects from spraying are to see their healthcare provider.  Reactions to exposure vary greatly from person to person.

If bitten by a mosquito infected with EEE a person could develop encephalitis, or swelling of the brain.  So far this year one death - in Onondaga County - has been attributed to EEE.

Today's weather forecast is conducive to spraying but, in the event that bad weather arises, spraying may occur on the 27th.
