DENVER (AP) — Denver's mayor says he is proud of students who have staged protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner but now he's urging them to stay in school.

Mayor Michael Hancock issued his call Monday after the latest in series of walkouts by Denver-areas students.

Several hundred students from South High School marched to the state Capitol and then on to East High School, where the wave of student demonstrations started last Wednesday. They had told administrators they only planned to protest nearby.

Pastor Del Phillips of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance happened to be meeting with students at East High about their protest when the other students arrived. He says the gathering remained peaceful and he also urged students to go back to school after making their point.
