BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Better Business Bureau warns that scammers pretending to offer computer tech support are active in upstate New York.

The Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York says one scam involves a phone call from someone claiming to be a specialist at a computer company. The person claims there is a software issue that requires them to access the computer remotely.

In another, a pop-up window appears advising the user to contact Microsoft immediately about a security breach. And in another, a caller to the bureau said their computer screen froze and they wrote checks totaling $900 to solve the problem.

The Better Business Bureau reminds people to not rely on caller ID to know who is calling and to not give remote access to their computer to strangers.
