BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities have charged five young people in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident on an upstate New York road.

The Saratoga County Sheriff's Office says 32-year-old Jacob Perring was hit by a vehicle around 1:30 a.m. Sunday as he stood along the road where he lived in the Saratoga County village of Ballston Spa. Deputies say the driver didn't stop.

Perring later died at Saratoga Hospital.

The sheriff's office announced Wednesday it had charged the driver, 23-year-old Craig Dufore of Ballston Spa, with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting a fatal accident and tampering with physical evidence. He has been released from the county jail. It couldn't be determined if he has a lawyer.

Four passengers ranging in age from 20 to 24 were charged with tampering with evidence and making a false statement.
