CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A former Long Island educator has been sentenced to five years in prison after admitting in federal court to downloading child pornography and keeping the photos on thumb drives in his home.

Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/2clyY0d ) 55-year-old Kevin O'Connell of Patchogue (PACH'-awg) was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty in July 2015.

O'Connell must also complete five years of supervised release and register as a sex offender.

O'Connell had been assistant superintendent of secondary education in the Roosevelt Union Free School District when he was arrested in 2012.

He has served as principal of Bellport High School in Brookhaven and an assistant principal at Walter G. O'Connell Copiague (COH'-payg) High School.

O'Connell's attorney didn't return a call seeking comment.

The school districts didn't return requests seeking comment.
