Fire Breaks Out At South Utica Sports Plex

Utica, NY (WIBX) - The Utica Fire Department plans to investigate an early morning fire at the Sports Plex building on French Road, In Utica.

According to Assistant Fire Chief, Andre Esposito, the fire broke out around 3:30 this morning. Crews originally fought the fire from the inside, but once the flames spread into the attic, crews moved outside to fight the blaze.

Esposito said once an investigation is opened, they can begin to piece together what happened.

"We're trying to verify whether they were still actively using the building or it was just dormant, whether the power was going to it," Esposito said. "All those things will be checked into."

Burrito Jonz owner, John Winter, said the building had been used as recently as a few days ago.

"On Sunday, the Roller Derby used it for practice," Winter said.

Fire crews will be on the scene today until the fire is completely under control, then once the area is safe, the investigation will begin.
