June Trial For NY Woman Accused In Kayak Death Of Fiance
GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) — A judge has set a June trial date for a 37-year-old woman accused of fatally sabotaging her fiance's kayak on the Hudson River two years ago.
Angelika Graswald, of Poughkeepsie, faces second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the April 2015 drowning death of 46-year-old Vincent Viafore. An Orange County judge on Tuesday scheduled jury selection to begin June 13.
Prosecutors say Graswald removed a drain plug from Viafore's kayak and pushed a floating paddle away from him after his kayak capsized during an outing in April 2015.
Graswald's attorney said the death was an accident caused by high waves, cold water and alcohol.
Graswald remains in Orange County Jail on $3 million bail.
The trial had been scheduled to begin in March, but was delayed amid pre-trial motions.
