With May already being a terrible month for drugstore chains, the last thing customers want to hear is that their local pharmacy is going under.

Just last week, Walgreens confirmed it was closing four additional locations across New York, bringing the total number to 10 so far this year.

For another chain, the writing has been on the wall for over a month that it was going out of business entirely.

The following week, Rite Aid announced plans to close at least 68 locations nationwide, including 2 in New York.

The chain has since revised its intended closures to 142, which amounts to over 10% of its portfolio.  This includes an additional 5 in the Empire State.

  • 5901 Bay Parkway, Brooklyn

  • 8222 18th Avenue, Brooklyn

While Rite Aid's 14 Central New York locations haven't been mentioned, their fate is still undecided.

The chain is undergoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, where it is in the process of selling and closing all of its stores. Next month, the company is expected to start issuing layoff notices to its employees.

If Rite Aid is sold, the future buyer will get to decide what to do with them. If no buyer is found, these stores will cease to exist.

To date, there are 1,240 Rite Aids in the United States.

Other Chains and Companies Struggling in 2025

Pharmacies aside, several national companies are also struggling to stay afloat - even banks.  TD Bank confirmed it was closing 40 locations nationwide, including 5 in the Empire State.

Denny's is also downsizing and recently shuttered 2 locations in Central New York.
