The New York State Association for Pupil Transportation has released the results of a survey taken earlier this month regarding motorists passing stopped school buses.

In the 23 school districts that participated, 618 school bus drivers reported they were illegally passed a total of 431 times, including seven passes on the passenger side of the bus.

The Association says at that rate of passing, when applied to the over 50,000 school buses in the the state, the total estimated illegal passing rate is nearly 35,000 for that day.

They're urging the Senate and Assembly to pass legislation that would allow cameras to be mounted on school buses and for the evidence from those cameras to be used to prosecute motorists who illegally pass school buses.
