ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — State police are reminding upstate New Yorkers with pistol permits of the upcoming deadline to recertify them.

Pistol permit holders have to recertify every five years, so that means anybody who was issued one before Jan. 15, 2013 must recertify by the end of January 2018. Those who fail to comply by the deadline will have their permits revoked.

Those who choose not to renew online can do so by mail. Paper forms are available at all state police stations and recertification is free.

As part of the recertification process, licensees must affirm they're not prohibited from possessing firearms under state and federal law.

Permit holders from New York City, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties are not required to recertify through this process.
