What goes perfect with pumpkins left over from Halloween? Animals smashing them at the Utica Zoo? They are holding a Pumpkin Smash, but instead of using a hammer or throwing them on the ground, they will be given to animals to do it! It's pretty cool seeing a lion or even a monkey destroying them. Orange goo is sure to fly everywhere!

According to the Utica Zoo website everything from the lions to the hissing roaches will have at the pumpkins. Here is a full schedule:

  • 10:30 AM: African Lions & African Crested Porcupines
  • 11:00 AM: White Naped Cranes
  • 11:30 AM: Camel Talk
  • 12:00 PM: Primate Building
  • 12:30 PM: Sea Lion Feeding
  • 1:00 PM: Mini Barn, Beaver & Main Barn
  • 2:00 PM: Red Panda
  • 2:30 PM: Cockroaches
  • 3:00 PM: Sea Lion Feeding
  • 3:30: Red Fox

Now you know when your favorite animal will be doing some smashing. The Zoo's reason behind doing this is,

Zoo Keepers provide such items known as enrichment to the animals in order to help stimulate them in a captive environment. Enrichment promotes natural behaviors like foraging, hunting, climbing, grooming, running, and digging. Enrichment plays an essential role in the health and well-being of all animals in zoos. It is a part of all the keepers’ daily routines.

Pumpkin Smash is included as part of your regular admission price to the zoo and you can visit the Utica Zoo website for more details.
