Sinkhole Forces Residents From Albany Apartment Building

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Dozens of residents have been forced from their Albany apartment building after a broken water pipe caused the street in front of the building to collapse.

City public works officials say a 42-inch water main broke early Tuesday morning, undermining soil beneath the pavement and causing a large sinkhole to open. A sport utility vehicle parked on the street fell into the hole. A tow truck hauled it out hours later.

Water gushed from the pipe for hours as crews worked to shut off an 85-year-old valve. Officials say it will take at least a week to repair the damage.

More than 70 residents of the adjacent apartment building were forced from their residences. The American Red Cross has set up a shelter for them in Albany.
