The City of Binghamton has adopted a new approach to trying to prevent too-tall vehicles from slamming into a railroad bridge.

Signs have been posted on Robinson Street warning truck drivers not to proceed under the tracks until they have verified that their vehicle can do so safely.

In recent years, several trucks and other vehicles have been seriously damaged when they struck the East Side bridge.

The crashes have occurred despite prominent signs noting the maximum safe height for vehicles to make it under the span.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Mayor Richard David said he believes there are some "simple things" that can be done to get the attention of drivers.

David said the signs should help deal with the problem without the need to make expensive changes to the street.

There have been no reported crashes at the bridge since the signs were installed a few weeks ago.
