Construction will begin Monday on a $6.4 million project to reconstruct a portion of Routes 5S and 5A in Utica and build a new drainage system.

The State Department of Transportation says the project will improve safety and separate storm water drainage  from the city's sanitary sewer, which currently run together.

The project includes reconstructing and resurfacing Route 5A between Champlain Avenue and the Susquehanna Railroad crossing, and removing and replacing the drainage structures.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2017.
