New York To Acquire Mountain In Southern Adirondacks

JOHNSBURG, N.Y. (AP) — The Open Space Institute has acquired a tract including a scenic mountain in the southeastern Adirondacks with plans to transfer ownership to New York state.

The 1,285-acre property in Warren County includes Huckleberry Mountain, which has a long, open peak ridge rising 2,400 feet with spectacular cliffs.

The land adjoins Wilcox Lake Wild Forest, which includes Crane Mountain, a popular, publically-accessible mountain peak in the town of Johnsburg.

The protected land includes an existing trail that traverses much of Huckleberry Mountain, which has great views and dozens of rock-climbing routes. But it currently takes several hours to hike to it over Crane Mountain.

The acquisition will allow easier access once the state creates a new trailhead and opens it to the public.
