NORTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Investigators are searching a field in the southern Adirondacks for the remains of an upstate New York teenager who disappeared more than 30 years ago.

Police in Saratoga Springs tell the Times Union of Albany that state police investigators are excavating property in the Fulton County town of Northampton, 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Albany.

Police are looking for the remains of Tammie McCormick, who was 13 years old when she disappeared in April 1986 while headed to school in Saratoga.

Police say the new search was prompted by information received over the past few months. The property being searched is owned by a relative of a now-deceased corrections officer who was considered a person of interest in the case.

Officials say the guard died of a heart attack in 2001.
