The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is being asked to approve a form of fracking in Tioga County that is different than the high-volume hydraulic fracture drilling that is banned in New York State.

Snyder Farm Group and Tioga Energy Partners LLC announced an application has been filed with the DEC for a method using gelled propane and sand instead of water to break apart Marcellus Shale to release natural gas.

Dozens of people were on hand for a news conference in the Town of Barton to hear the announcement of plans to frack in Halsey Valley on 3 1/2 acres of the Ernest Snyder farm.

Developers plan to drill into the Utica Shale and then do horizontal drilling into the Marcellus Shale.  The group has applied for two drilling permits.

The plan has the support of Town Supervisor Leon Carey.
