Herkimer, NY (WIBX) - One Herkimer County Community College graduate is getting his shot at the big leagues.

Willie Gabay, a pitcher for HCCC, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.

During his two year stay at the college, the Mahopac, NY native racked up an impressive 141 strikeouts in 96 innings, while maintaining a 6-1 record and 2.62 ERA in his sophomore season.

At 6'1", the right-hander has a fastball in the low 90's and earned Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year honors during his second season.

Gabay says he is thankful for the opportunity to prove himself for an organization like the Rays, and thanks the college for their ongoing assistance.

"Herkimer baseball was the first step that helped me accomplish this dream. I want to thank God, my family, my Herk family and all of my friends who have supported me through it all."

Last year, Tampa Bay finished the regular season with a record of 91-71 and made the post-season. They lost their Division Series match-up against the Texas Rangers.
