Historic Brooklyn Battery Tunnel Renamed In Honor Of Hugh Carey

New York, NY (WIBX) - If you are travelling to Manhattan and are headed toward the Battery Tunnel do not be confused if you are redirected to the Governor Hugh Carey Tunnel.

The tunnel was re-dedicated this morning in honor of the late governor from Brooklyn who died last year at the age of 92.  Carey was New York's governor for two terms after  serving as a Congressman from Brooklyn.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority renamed the tunnel this morning after former Mayor Ed Koch lobbied for the change.  The bridge has been open to the public since May of 1950 and was used as one of the primary transportation conduits following the September 11th terrorist attacks.
