Invasive Insect Spotted Twice In Upstate New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York officials say an invasive insect from Asia called the spotted lanternfly has been spotted in two upstate counties.

State environmental and agricultural officials say there have been confirmed sightings in Albany and Yates counties. An adult spotted lanternfly was discovered in a vehicle in the Albany area and another adult was reported on a private Keuka Lake property in Penn Yan.

The invasive pest feeds on more than 70 plant species, including maples, apple trees and hops. State officials say it has the potential to harm New York's forests and farms.

Adults resemble colorful moths and are active from July to December.

Officials urge New York residents to report potential sightings to spottedlanternfly@dec.ny.gov.

The insect was found in Pennsylvania in 2014 and has since been found in other states.
