A free Document Shredding and Textile Collection event for Madison County residents will be held on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Buyea Road Residential Station in Canastota.

Residents can bring up to four filing boxes of personal and confidential documents to be shredded and recycled

They're also encouraged to drop off clothing, footwear and blankets as part of their textile collection event.

Accepted items include shirts, pants, handbags, backpacks, sneakers, boots, blankets and towels. Textiles must be clean, dry and placed in a plastic bag.

According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State residents throw away almost 1.4 billion pounds of textiles a year.
