Mohawk Valley Report Sees Small Uptick In Manufacturing

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — A state economic report on the Mohawk Valley says there has been a small uptick in manufacturing employment after a long-term decline.

New York state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released a report on it Friday.

He noted that the valley's once robust manufacturing sector declined 39 percent from 2000 to 2010.

But he said employment in the sector rose 1.9 percent from 2010 to 2017. He cited growth in manufacturing subsectors related to food, electrical equipment and appliances.

The Mohawk Valley's annual unemployment rate last year was 5.4 percent, higher than the statewide rate of 4.7 percent.

DiNapoli's report looked at Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida and Schoharie counties.

The largest city in the region is Utica.
