Nagin Gets 10 Year Sentence

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ray Nagin entered New Orleans City Hall as a cool, confidant self-styled reformer in 2002. He won national notoriety as a passionate, if profane, critic of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He exited in 2010 under suspicion.

Next stop for Nagin: federal prison.

The 58-year-old former cable television manager, was sentenced to 10 years in prison Wednesday for bribery, money laundering and other crimes stemming from his two terms as New Orleans' Democratic mayor from 2002-2010.

If the federal prison authorities go along with the recommendation of U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan, Nagin will do the time at a federal lockup in Oakdale, Louisiana. Former Gov. Edwin Edwards spent part of his sentence there. And disgraced former Congressman William Jefferson of New Orleans is incarcerated there.
