ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The state Public Service Commission is considering a new area code for the 518 region in eastern New York.

The agency will hold hearings starting next Tuesday in Glens Falls, Colonie, Gloversville, Plattsburgh, Lake Placid and the Columbia County village of Valatie (vuh-LAY-shuh) to discuss the options.

Under one option, called an overlay, a new code would be used throughout the region for new services while existing phone numbers keep the old area code.

Under a second option, the region would be divided into two sections. In one, current and new customers would use the 518 area code, and in the other, all customers, including existing ones, would get a new area code.

People can comment at the hearings, online (www.dps.ny.gov ) or by phone (800-335-2120).
