Albany, NY (WIBX) - The State Department of Health has banned synthetic marijuana statewide.

The order comes one week after the "Daily News" ran a story about how the fake pot recently sent dozens of young people to the emergency room.

The dangerous designer drug is commonly sold as herbal incense at convenience stores, gas stations and bodegas across New York.

The products would include brand names such as "Spice", "K2", "Black Mamba" and "Sky High."

The ban calls for sales and distribution to stop immediately.

Anyone who continues to sell the drug could be subject to civil action.

Legislation is pending in Albany to make it a crime to sell the substance.
