New York State Says 10,500 Weighed in On Common Core

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  New York education officials say more than 10,500 people responded to a survey seeking input on the Common Core learning standards â?? and gave mostly positive feedback.

Results released Monday say more than 70 percent of responses to the state Education Department survey were supportive of the standards that are meant to increase college-readiness. About 29 percent of responses disagreed with them.

Commissioner MaryEllen Elia says the findings indicate that people support higher standards, but that adjustments are needed, particularly in the early grades.

The standards are meant as a grade-by-grade blueprint of the math and reading skills students should master to be ready for college.

A task force assembled by Gov. Andrew Cuomo recommended last week that the state overhaul and rename the standards amid public backlash over testing.
