NY Senate Bill Targets Drug Sales At Drug Treatment Centers

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York state Senate has voted to toughen the penalties for selling drugs near a drug or alcohol treatment center.

The measure, which passed the Senate on Monday, is intended to stop dealers who seek to exploit people in recovery. It would make the sale of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a treatment center, rehab facility or methadone clinic a felony.

Sen. Fred Akshar sponsored the legislation. The Binghamton Republican said it's just one example of tougher laws needed to "drive drug dealers out" of New York communities.

Another bill passed by the Senate Monday aims to protect the youngest New Yorkers by increasing penalties for selling drugs to children under age 14.

The bills now move to the Assembly.
