The Utica College men's hockey team came up on the short end of a close game in Maryland at Stevenson University on Friday night.

The No. 8 Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period; but, gave up 3 goals in the second  to enter the final period of play trailing 3-2. Utica played even with the Mustangs in the 3rd, each team scoring 2 goals.  With minutes left in the game and Utica trailing by a goal, the Pioneers gave up an empty net goal with just over a minute to play. In the final seconds, Utica would pull the goalie again and score on the one-man advantage; but, time would expire with Utica trailing 5-4.

The loss snaps a string of two straight overall wins from the previous weekend for Utica. The Pioneers are now 5-2-2 in their first nine games of the regular season, and 3-2-1 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. Stevenson continues on a program-best start at 8-1 overall this season.

 

Utica continues on its road trip on Saturday as it meets Chatham University at 4 p.m..  The Pioneers will return home next weekend for the annual New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss.
