ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say 20-mile police pursuit of a suicidal New York man ended when he died after purposely veering into a dump truck soon after telling his girlfriend in a cellphone call that he intended to kill himself.

State police say 36-year-old Emmanuel Humphreys assaulted his girlfriend late Saturday night at a home in rural Richmondville and fled the scene. He was pulled over by troopers, but sped away and ran over a trooper's foot.

Troopers and sheriff's deputies pursued Humphrey into Rotterdam, where he veered into a dump truck. His car bounced off and hit a trooper vehicle, causing Humphrey's vehicle to split in half. He died at the scene.

Police say Humphrey called his girlfriend during the chase and told her he was looking for a large vehicle to drive into in order to kill himself.
