CORNWALL, N.Y. (AP) — New York state transportation officials say a stretch of highway along the Hudson River near West Point is closed so crews can repair damage caused by heavy rains earlier this week.

The Department of Transportation says Route 218 is closed Thursday morning from the Cornwall town line to West Point due to "emergency construction." DOT officials say the work includes filling potholes and removing leaves removed from the roadway.

DOT officials say Tuesday's heavy rains damaged pavement and brought down large quantities of wet leaves onto the highway, causing hazardous driving conditions on the winding road that crosses Storm King Mountain, just north of West Point.

DOT officials say they expect the highway to reopen by 3 p.m. Thursday.
