CORNWALL, N.Y. (AP) — Another 400 acres have been added to a state park in the Hudson Valley that offers ridge-top views of the surrounding landscape.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the acreage added to Schunnemunk State Park in Orange County was purchased from the Open Space Institute for about $800,000. The Democrat says the purchase will open trails in the park year-round and protect natural habitat.

The park's 3,300 acres located just west of the Thruway spread across the borders of the towns of Blooming Grove, Cornwall and Woodbury.

Officials say expanding the park protects the area from overdevelopment and extends the region's recreational trail network.

The park is a favorite of many long-distance hikers traveling the Long Path from the George Washington Bridge in Manhattan to Thacher State Park, outside Albany.
