A portion of Route 49 has been designated to honor those who served during the Vietnam War.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation sponsored by Senator Joseph Griffo and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi that names Route 49 from Utica to Rome as the "Oneida County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway."

Griffo and Brindisi pursued the designation on behalf of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Utica Chapter.

Thomas J. Buono, President of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 944 in Utica said: “On behalf of our organization, we are honored to have Route 49 designated for America’s Vietnam Veterans, especially for the more than 9,000 who served from Oneida County, and the 68 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

A ceremony marking the designation will be held at a later date.
