NEWCOMB, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are searching for a New Jersey man who hasn't been seen since he went hiking in a rugged area of New York's Adirondack Mountains earlier this month.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says 28-year-old Alex Stevens, of Hopewell, was last seen on Sept. 2 near the base of Wallface Mountain in the High Peaks Wilderness, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of Lake Placid.

DEC officials say family members on Sunday afternoon reported Stevens overdue from a three-day hike that he apparently started eight days earlier.

Forest rangers found his vehicle parked at a trailhead in Newcomb, where an entry in the trail register indicated he planned to spend three days in the woods.

More than two dozen rangers and volunteers along with a state police helicopter conducted a search Monday.
