TONAWANDA, N.Y. (AP) — A rare black swan seen swimming in the Erie Canal north of Buffalo has been safely captured and moved to an animal sanctuary.

A rescue team from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals corralled the bird in North Tonawanda earlier this week.

They say the swan is native to Australia and speculate it was someone's pet that either strayed or was released. The bird is all black with a bright red bill, compared to the more common white swans in the area.

The SPCA posted photos and video of the unusual visitor to its Facebook page.
