Officials at St. Elizabeth Medical Center are announcing a staff reduction at the hospital.

Ten employees have been laid off and about 40 vacant positions will be eliminated.

The employees worked in all areas of the Medical Center and ranged from administrative to those with direct-care responsibilities.

President and CEO Richard Ketcham says a number of factors led to the reduction of the workforce, including the decreased reimbursements to hospitals by Medicaid.

Hospital officials say the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care remains their primary focus and patient care will not be affected.

St. E's currently employs 1,951 people.
