KEENE, N.Y. (AP) — New York officials are banning roadside parking in an area highly popular with Adirondack hikers.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says parking will be prohibited on both shoulders of state Route 73 near the Roaring Brook Falls Trailhead starting Friday.

Route 73 is the main route to Lake Placid and the High Peaks region, and a number of popular trailheads are concentrated in the area. Parked cars can line both sides of the road on weekends when lots fill up, creating a safety hazard.

Parking will be prohibited on the shoulder of the northbound lane from the entrance to the Roaring Brook Trailhead Parking area north to the bridge over Putnam Brook. Parking will be prohibited on the shoulder of the southbound lane between the guiderails south of Putnam Brook Bridge.
